    Hey Caroline!

Great project! I totally agree that it is important for students to understand why we have rules in the classroom. It is not enough just to tell them the rules – if they understand why they need to follow them, they will automatically be more apt to actually respect and follow the rules. I also liked how you mentioned that it is important to be clear that the problem is the behavior, not the actual student. I have seen students just melt when they are faced with behavior problems because they begin to see themselves as a “bad kid.” That is definitely something we want to avoid, especially when dealing with more extreme behaviors.

You clearly made great personal connections with your student and were able to figure out his interests as well as what motivates him in the classroom. I think that is a great way to figure out how to best meet individual students’ needs and how to structure a behavior plan!

I love the way you collaborated with multiple people at your school to develop your behavior intervention plan. It’s obvious you were able to take expertise from a lot of different areas and combine it with your knowledge of the student to create a very effective plan. It sounds like he was a real challenge!

Even though your plan wasn’t as successful as you hoped, I think you definitely had some great reflections about it – which is almost equally as important! I definitely think it’s hard to gain authority as a student teacher sometimes, so the simple success of getting him to view you as an authority was a big one! What you learned will also help you when dealing with other challenging behaviors in the future!

    Caroline!

I am very impressed with your project. It shows a lot of thought and it looks like you have learned a ton. I agree with your behavior management philosophy. It is important that the positives of student behavior outweight the negatives.

I also enjoyed looking at your anecdotal notes. They looked like they were really detailed and I think that you should consider doing this even when you begin teaching full time.

I loved looking at your entire powerpoint and it is very exciting to know that your student began to look at all of the adults as authority figures. Good luck with everything in the future!
